Sugarcane Cloggers of Norton, VA Mountain Music & Dance Performances

The Sugarcane Clogging team retired in 2009 after 36 years of clogging performances, teaching and demonstrating. Anna, the founder & director, still dances at various local events and venues and teaches on a private basis.

Anna now stays busy mostly by playing and performing the Strumstick and Psaltery and teaching and performing on the autoharp and Appalachian or Mountain Lap Dulcimer. She has taught beginning dulcimer at all eleven years of Mountain Music School at Mountain Empire Community College, Big Stone Gap, Va. Although she has been the Pre-Show Coordinator for the Trail of the Lonesome Pine outdoor drama, the state's official and longest-running outdoor drama, she spent her first season as a musician with the regular Trail house band this summer (2015). She also teaches music and dance lessons in her home.

Our goal is to promote, perpetuate and preserve the traditional dance art of Appalachian clogging, flatfoot, folk dance and other forms of mountain dance for future generations. The classes are an effort to pass down the dances of our mountain ancestors so the art will live on. We learn from our Appalachian roots. In addition, it is fun and great exercise.

n Oct. 2013, Anna was inducted into America's Clogging Hall of Fame at the Stompin' Grounds in Maggie Valley, NC. This is an honor bestowed by her peers.
